Behind the Brand

"Hi, I'm Makila — and I'm so glad you found your way here.

I'm an Australian living in Switzerland for over 16 years, where my husband and I are raising our two boys. By training I'm a qualified Beauty Therapist, and for as long as I can remember I've been drawn to natural ingredients, homemade remedies, and the simple rituals that make everyday life feel a little softer.

Growing up on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, I took for granted what I had around me — the Lemon Myrtle trees in the rainforest, the eucalyptus-scented air of the bush, wildflowers that grew in colours I've never found anywhere else in the world. When I moved to Switzerland, I missed that landscape more than I expected. Not just the look of it — the smell of it.

Akuna Florals is my way of bringing that home with me. Every product I make is inspired by the native botanicals of Australia — plants I grew up with, plants that have been part of this land for thousands of years. I source Australian ingredients where possible, and where I can't, I honour the inspiration through scent, through design, through story.

A few years ago, a particularly stressful season of life pushed me to slow down and reassess. I turned to essential oils, wellness rituals, and the quiet comfort of handmade things — and found something I hadn't expected: genuine calm. That experience, combined with years of wanting to create products I truly believed in, gave me the courage to start Akuna Florals.

Everything I make is crafted by hand, in small batches, using natural ingredients free from harsh chemicals. My hope is simple — that each product brings a small moment of peace to your day, your body, and your mind.

— Makila"

Meaning behind the name

When choosing a name, I wanted something that reflected both my Australian roots and the spirit behind this brand.

I found it in Akuna — a word believed to come from an Australian Aboriginal language, associated with flowing water. It speaks of movement, life, and the natural rhythm of the world.

At a time when parts of my life felt uncertain, that image of flowing water became an anchor. Water doesn't stop — it finds a way. It moves around obstacles, keeps going, keeps flowing. That's the energy I wanted to bring into this business: gentle, persistent, and always moving forward.

If you're standing at the edge of something you've been dreaming about — take the step. Keep flowing.
